At Al Zain, we believe that the essence of Arabian heritage is best expressed through collaboration. One of the contributors to this collaborative initiative is the talented artist Nermin Habib. Known for her hand constructed ceramic vessels, Nermin has created a stunning series of vessels, “Desert Jewels”, that draw inspiration from Arab Deco, Al Zain’s iconic high jewellery collection. For Nermin, the act of creation is deeply introspective. As she molds and shapes the clay, she is simultaneously exploring her own journey of becoming.

NERMIN HABIB

At the heart of my multidisciplinary creative practice lies a fascination with the in-between the liminal spaces where cultures, cities, interests, and careers intersect. These spaces are where I feel most at home, and it is here that my creative process thrives. My work, particularly in ceramics, reflects this ongoing evolution. I explore the ways in which materials, techniques, and ideas come together, constantly bridging different creative disciplines in a process of becoming. In my studio, clay becomes a canvas for storytelling. I use hand-building techniques to create ceramic vessels, but more than just functional objects, these pieces embody narratives. I am drawn to the tactile nature of the process pressing my fingers into the clay, compressing it with a metal rib, and building layers of texture that chronicle the making of each form. Each mark is a testament to the intimate dialogue between artist and medium, celebrating the material’s capacityto record every movement, every decision. The result is a surface rich with texture, where imperfections are embraced as part of the piece's story. This act of creation is, for me, deeply introspective. As I mold and shape the clay, I am simultaneously exploring my own journey of becoming. Each vessel is a mirror for my thoughts, feelings, and aspirations, a reflection of the delicate dance between control and surrender. The imperfections in my work are not flaws; they are integral to the narrative, expressing the tension and vulnerability that lie at the heart of the creative process. Ultimately, my work in ceramics is about transformation of the material, the idea, and the self. It is a journey marked by discovery, growth, and a profound respect for the in-between spaces where magic happens. Each piece is a testament to the power of creation and introspection, an invitation for others to embrace their own evolving journey.

DESERT JEWELS

Desert Jewels is a series inspired by the elegance of Art Deco, reimagined through the intricate, geometric beauty of Arabian design. Paying homage to Al Zain’s Jewelry Arabia exhibit, this collection of clay-crafted table lamps and vessels brings together two distinct aesthetics to celebrate cultural fusion. Each piece transforms the earthy essence of clay into a luminous work of art, offering more than function; these lamps are radiant sculptures, casting a delicate glow that recalls the allure of fine jewelry. Drawing on Arabic Sadu weaving techniques, the surfaces feature carefully hand cut geometric patterns that merge Art Deco’s sophistication with the heritage of Arabian craft. In my studio, each lamp and vessel unfolds through an intimate, hand-built process. As I shape the clay, the tactile act of layering and marking becomes a form of storytelling. Every impression reflects a dialogue between tradition and innovation, grounded in the region’s cultural identity. Desert Jewels is a modern homage to heritage a reflection of the balance between past and present. Each piece invites viewers to experience the warmth and timeless beauty of Arab Deco, offering an illuminated journey into the richness of tradition reimagined.
